Rubrics measures competencies on a scale from 0 to 4, from "Not Evident" to "Mastering." It fosters continuous improvement, supports personalized learning paths, and offers clear guidance on what is needed to achieve competency mastery.
Starting in September 2024, Tomorrow University will implement rubrics as part of our grading system, enhancing how competencies are measured and assessed across challenges. This change supports our Competency-Based Learning (CBL) approach, which focuses on what you learn and how you apply it, rather than how much time you spend learning. By integrating rubrics, we aim to provide more structured feedback that helps you better understand your progress and areas for improvement.
Key aspects of CBL include:
- Mastery over time spent: Progress is based on demonstrating mastery of a competency, not the duration of study.
- Actionable feedback: Assessments provide relevant, timely feedback to promote continuous improvement.
- Real-world application: Learning outcomes are clear, measurable, and directly applicable to real-world challenges.
What These Changes Mean for Our Learners
The introduction of rubrics marks a significant improvement in our assessment process, emphasizing mastery and continuous growth. Rubrics will give you clearer guidance on expectations and how to succeed. Here’s how this change benefits you:
- Clarity: Rubrics break down each competency, offering detailed criteria to help you understand what’s required at each level of mastery.
- Self-directed improvement: You’ll have the opportunity to resubmit assignments until you achieve full mastery, supporting ongoing growth.
Competency Levels: From 0 to 4
Competencies are measured on a scale from 0 to 4, where:
- 0 - Not Evident: No evidence of competency is displayed.
- 1 - Emerging: Basic traces of competency are present but incomplete.
- 2 - Developing: Competency is demonstrated but only partially adequate.
- 3 - Proficient: Competency is adequately demonstrated as expected.
- 4 - Mastering: The performance exceeds expectations with confident and intuitive application.
From your perspective as a learner:
- Rubrics are created. For each competency within the rubric, a point system will be given on a scale from 0-4
- When you submit your deliverables for a challenge, the rubric will be graded by the tutor.
- The final grade of the rubric will be an average of the
points achieved/total points
. This will turn out a percentage. - The percentage will translate into a deliverable which is either ‘achieved’ or ‘not achieved’
Unlimited Submissions for Continuous Improvement
You can now resubmit assignments as many times as needed to improve your competency mastery, as long as it is within the grace period. This encourages continuous improvement:
- For failed assignments: Resubmissions are allowed until the grace period has ended.
- If you’ve already passed, you can still resubmit to enhance your mastery, though the original grade remains. The focus is on competency improvement, not grade improvement.
