Why does wellbeing matter?

We all want to feel good, right? Wellbeing matters on a personal level because it fuels engagement, satisfaction, and productivity and protects us from burnout. On an organisational level, it reduces turnover, improves customer satisfaction, and drives long-term returns.

But wellbeing is more than a “nice to have”—it’s a strategic foundation for sustainable growth.

As the WHO defines it, wellbeing is a positive state that enables both individuals and societies to thrive. It’s a resource for daily life, shaped by social, economic, and environmental conditions. True wellbeing encompasses not just quality of life, but our ability to contribute to the world with meaning and purpose.

When we invest in wellbeing, we’re not just supporting individuals – we’re cultivating resilient, purpose-driven societies capable of facing challenges and building a more sustainable future.

How do we reach a high level of wellbeing?

There are no shortcuts to wellbeing. It is an active practice of building positive habits and systems, even when you are feeling good, so that they can be resources when you need them most.

Seligman's PERMA theory of wellbeing is an attempt to answer these fundamental questions. There are five building blocks that enable flourishing – Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment (hence PERMA) – and there are techniques to increase each. Read it through.

Even if we take care of our wellbeing, there are times when we simply struggle, and that’s okay. It’s important to be aware and ask for help. It’s not a weakness, it’s a strength and opportunity.
