Guidelines for Contesting Grades

At Tomorrow University, we prioritize transparency and fairness in our grading process. If you believe your final grade is incorrect, you may contest it by following the guidelines below.

As our academic program is designed around challenging you as an independent learner, you may encounter some difficulty during our challenges and occasionally may not receive an ‘”achieved” on your first submission. We are committed to providing a fair and transparent grading process to ensure that your academic achievements accurately reflect your efforts and understanding of the challenge material. Your grades will also be accompanied by constructive feedback highlighting your successes and areas to be improved upon in your resubmission.

However, we understand that there may be instances when you feel your work sufficiently addresses the assessment criteria, and should therefore receive a different grade. To maintain fairness and integrity in this process, we have established the following guidelines for students to meet the assessment criteria for challenges, and contest their grades.

Before beginning the grade contest process, please follow the below pre and post submission guidelines for making sure you work aligns with the challenge expectations.

Pre-submission: make sure you understand the challenge and criteria:

  • Evaluation criteria review: Prior to each challenge submission, be sure to carefully review the evaluation criteria and rubrics. Make sure you understand each criteria and how your work will need to address the rubrics.

  • Raise questions: Throughout the challenge discuss any queries you have with your work and how to address the evaluation criteria and rubrics in the challenge slack channel or during the live sessions. This is particularly important for the challenge discussion and challenge reflection, where dedicated time will be allotted for final capstone discussion and questions.
  • Share your work: In the slack channel and live sessions, we encourage you to share your ideas and progress with the final capstone. This allows tutors and owners to conduct a preliminary review of your work, and provide some early feedback on your progress.
  • Case studies: Prior to submission, review any case studies which may be available for the challenge*. These are high quality student submissions from previous students including tutor feedback. Pay particular attention to the tutor comments, especially those related to how the student addressed the assessment criteria.

*As some challenges have been recently developed, previous submission case studies may not be available

Post-submission: Reviewing your feedback

Following submission, you will receive your grades and detailed feedback on your work. This feedback will typically follow the following structure:
  1. General reflection

  2. Overview of how you successfully met the achieved criteria

  3. Highlight of particularly strong aspects of your submission

  4. Overview of why you did not meet certain criteria and/or which criteria were not addressed

  5. Advice on how you can meet the missing criteria in your resubmission. This will include a general framework and/or example for meeting the criteria, so pay particular attention here.

  6. Final positive reflection

After receiving feedback on a not yet achieved submission we advise you to:

  • Review feedback: When reviewing feedback on a not yet achieved submission, pay particular attention to points 4 and 5. If you attempted to address criteria but were unsuccessful, these will highlight why your work failed to meet the criteria, and how (using examples, instructions and a new framework) your work can meet these criteria in the future.
  • Review the case studies: After receiving a not yet achieved, review the challenge case studies again. Pay particular attention to how the student met the criteria that you missed. How, based on your feedback, can you provide a similar answer?
  • Discuss the feedback: In the event you are unable to receive an achieved after multiple submission attempts you may either:
    a) be still unclear on how to meet the assessment criteria or
    b) believe your work does in fact address the criteria sufficiently.
In either case, contact your tutor and/or challenge owner to discuss your work. In this discussion, highlight the area you are struggling with, and listen to the tutors/COs advice on why your work does not address this and how your work can address this. The tutor/CO may also suggest reviewing a case study together, particularly how the case study addresses the criteria you are struggling with.

If you and your tutor/CO still disagree on the grading of your assessment, it is possible to contest your grade. This however, should be the final step after trying to clarify the reasoning behind your grade. As such, please conduct your due diligence with the above steps, before proceeding to the grading review process below:
